At Spectrum Construction Services Ltd, we believe the strongest measure of our success is the long-term relationships we build with our clients. One such relationship is with the University of South Wales, whose Estates Department has engaged Spectrum Construction on a number of high-profile projects across multiple campuses.
Over recent years, we have delivered a range of refurbishment and conservation-led schemes for the University, all within live educational environments and to exacting quality, safety and compliance standards.
DELIVERING QUALITY AROSS DIVERSE PROJECTS
Our work with the University of South Wales has included the full renovation of an existing property, repurposing former office accommodation into two high-quality, two-bedroom student flats. The project incorporated the installation of solar photovoltaic tiles, supporting the University’s sustainability objectives. During delivery, the scope was expanded to include external landscaping, which was successfully integrated without impacting programme or quality. The completed flats are now in use as student accommodation.
We have also undertaken external refurbishment works to a Grade II listed building at the Treforest Campus, including window repairs, repointing, new cast iron rainwater goods and full render redecoration. The project was delivered on time and within budget, while respecting the building’s historic character.
Following the success of this scheme, Spectrum Construction was subsequently appointed to carry out timber window replacement and repairs at a Grade II listed building on the Glyntaff Campus. These conservation-sensitive works were completed to the same high standard, again meeting programme and budget requirements.
PROFESSIONAL MANAGEMENT IN LIVE ENVIRONMENTS
All projects were managed through regular progress meetings, allowing open discussion around programme, variations, value engineering opportunities and payment claims. Robust site management processes were maintained throughout, with all required documentation submitted in line with University and statutory requirements.
This included full compliance with health and safety obligations, such as PPE, RAMS, Construction Phase Plans, scaffolding inspections, payment claims and invoicing. Any health and safety matters - whether on site or involving subcontractors - were addressed promptly, effectively and appropriately.
Spectrum Construction is currently continuing works for the University, delivering a canopy roof replacement at the Treforest Campus, further reinforcing the trusted working relationship between both parties.
All homes fully comply with Welsh Government Design Quality Requirements (DQRs), including Lifetime Homes, RNIB standards and Secured by Design, enabling the scheme to be supported through Social Housing Grant (SHG) funding.
Communication, Professionalism and Trust
Feedback from the Estates team highlighted the importance of clear communication and professional conduct when working in an active university environment. Our team was recognised for being courteous, approachable and highly professional, with a strong understanding of the operational sensitivities involved in working around staff, students and public spaces.
"Spectrum provide a quality service on a varied level of project work, and I would welcome them to tender for opportunities at the University of South Wales going forward.”
